The power of coaching: You get what you focus on but don’t forget to take action.

Following my previous vlog called You get what you focus on, I realised that I forgot to mention the missing ingredients: take action;

A lot of people label themselves “coach”, which is quite easy as it is an unregulated profession. However, coaching ( life coaching, executive coaching, confidence coaching, and so on, not the carriage sort!) by trained people and following a strong code of ethics, has extremely powerful effects and sometimes in a very short period of time.

Here is an example of a time when coaching has made a huge amount of difference (it is linked with taking action, I promise!);

I am the co-leader of Essex Co-coaching group  which is affiliated with the Association for Coaching.The Association for Coaching® (AC) is a leading independent, and not-for-profit professional body dedicated to promoting best practice and raising the awareness and standards of coaching, worldwide”.

We are a group of coaches from different backgrounds and we meet every 6 weeks and usually face to face but recently on zoom (like most of the world, indeed!). You can join us if you want! Here is more information.

Anyhow, I am there and Suzanne White, a dearest coach is running a session on resilience. Suzanne is a lively and interesting coach who coaches with passion and direction. We have been through 8 weeks of lock-down already here in the UK and this feels really needed. At some point, I am with another coach the lovely Julie  in a break out room and we talk about what is missing in our lives. Suzanne had given us categories to explore and I start with the topic of health and ponders about losing weight.

I have been talking about losing weight to my friends for weeks if not about 1 to 2 years. Mind you, I am not fat and only need to lose a bit of belly wobble, as I am now past the menopause. Gaining weight is now easy but losing it seems to be a hard slog! I am proud of the fact that despite the lock down I have not put on weight but have not been able to shift any either. There is a certain sense of frustration as I feel that since we started the lock-down, I have been more conscious of my diet avoiding carbohydrates and being sensible on sugar.

When I report to the group, I admit that maybe I should just accept myself with my lovely slightly round belly. The others smile and as they appreciate me, I think they possibly think that I am making a fuss about not much at all.

In the next 24 years, something shifts in my head. I realise that I have been playing with the idea of losing weight but not being sufficiently serious about it.

Why lose weight anyhow? I am a happy -over 50 years old- woman with a lovely partner, no health conditions, quite sporty and not much to worry about. Is it that important?

After casually saying to my co-coaching group that I am fine just the way I am, this idea did not actually sit very well with me. I needed their help and their focus for me to realise that actually it did matter to me and I really needed to take action.

I needed to focus on it and stop pretending that it did not matter. It has been over a week and I have now lost 1.5 kilos ( about 3 pounds).

My blog “You get what you focus on” had the missing ingredients: take action.

 Yes I have not eaten much in the past week but I got the results that I wanted and because I am now determined, it does not feel that hard. (… for most of the time!)

This is the power of coaching,   and I would not have realised it without the support of the coaching group, think about it when you hire a coach!

When you focus on what you want, you also have to take action. It is not just about dreaming about it but about actually making the changes or taking the action to get you to the results you desire. Food for thought!  Lol
